Snowmobile Ordinance Information

Snowmobiles shall be allowed to travel on the roadway portion of public streets, alleys and other roadways within the City except for portions of roadway within a public park. A snowmobile may be operated in a ditch along Highway 12 and Highway 15 as permitted by state law. An operator that is operating a snowmobile on a public street, alley, or other roadway within the City shall comply with all City and State traffic rules and regulations applying to vehicles generally, except that a snowmobile shall not be required to have a bell, horn, or directional turn signals.

It is unlawful to operate a snowmobile within the limits of the City under any of the following provisions:

  1. On a public sidewalk provided for pedestrian travel.
  2. On the boulevard of any City street, except that a snowmobile may be operated on the boulevard on the north side of 12th Avenue between 7th street and Highway 15.
  3. So as to tow any person or thing in a street except through use of a rigid tow-bar attached to the rear of the snowmobile.
  4. On any public school property, or cemetery.
  5. In violation of any traffic ordinance, rule or regulation applying to vehicles in general.

It is unlawful to operate a snowmobile in any area designated as public park land within the City, except that snowmobiles may be operated on a trail officially marked and posted by the City  or their designee , as a snowmobile trail. Snowmobiles may be operated on Lake Farley.

Two or more snowmobiles traveling the same direction shall be operated behind the other with an interval of at least fifteen feet between and in no case shall snowmobiles ever be operated side-by-side.

It is unlawful to operate a snowmobile on the streets, alleys, roadways or other public places within the City Limits unless the operator has a valid driver’s license or permit and proof of insurance in their possession or unless the snowmobile shall have current license and registration.
