WATER SYSTEM MAINTENANCE 11/15/2024-11/17/2024
This weekend, city personnel will perform heavy flushing along the south side of Hwy 12 (from River St to 9th St to 10th Ave).
What to expect: Temporary water pressure changes and possible discoloration.
Steps to Flush Your Household Plumbing:
- Remove faucet aerators and rinse any particles.
- Begin flushing from the lowest floor to the top, fully opening cold water taps.
- Run water for about 10 minutes until it clears, then turn off faucets in reverse order.
- Re-attach aerators.
City hydrants are flushed regularly to ensure they are in working order for fire protection and to remove mineral deposits that may accumulate in water mains. During hydrant flushing, it is not unusual for residents to periodically experience discolored water or pressure changes.
If you notice discoloration and particles in your water supply during this process, turn your faucets on cold and let the water run until clear. Running an outside faucet is best. The discoloration is caused by iron and manganese that have settled into the water mains. Iron and manganese are two common minerals in water. Neither pose health hazard. If the discoloration persists beyond 30 minutes please notify the water department at 605-432-9575.
